CHAOS OF GENIUS // GENIUS OF CHAOS

This 16-page booklet is the result of an undergrad project focused around mimicking the style of a randomly selected influential graphic designer. For my booklet, I was assigned David Carson—a designer who, frankly, I wasn’t quite partial to. But as I began to research and engage with his work, I quickly developed respect for both his craft and his beliefs.

In order to re-create Carson’s iconic style, type is pushed through various methods of deconstruction, dismemberment, and destruction. Ragged alignment, slightly de-saturated colors, and faux production errors were utilized to convey Carson’s humanism. The cover features images of the ocean to connect not only to his background as a surfer, but also to his carefree nature. For body text, Bookman Old Style was chosen for its humanistic qualities and paired with the monospaced Orator Std as a nod to his early digital production practices.
